Fantastic news, you’ve finally taken the plunge, I know you wish you’d done it years ago, but a spouse, three kids, two dogs, a full time job etc, etc, ……aarrgghh!! Tell me about it! Better late than never is what I say.

Is it a novel, perhaps a short story? It could be your autobiography or even an article for a magazine/newsletter. Regardless of the content, nature or intensity of your writing make your self one promise …enjoy it! So many would be writers fall at the first hurdle, not through lack of talent, effort, commitment or endeavour. It is almost always a lack of planning that proves to be the major stumbling block.

The first and most important area to work on is structure. This brings together all the individual elements associated with your story in an organised manner, these include;

Your characters and their interaction/dialogue – conflict, humour, misunderstandings etc.

The overall theme of your story – good versus evil is usually a good one.

The major plot – that’s up to you!

Any sub-plots – skeletons in cupboards, vendettas, unrequited love, you get the idea

Location/setting/timescale – where and when? Time span – how long is your story? More important for short stories

A sting in the tail – keep them guessing right to the end!

Remember this is only a guide, the suggestions above outline some of the proven key points but it is your own individuality, creativeness and imagination that really counts.

Think about your favourite books/stories for a while and you will notice that apart from the subject matter, the structure, as outlined above is always the same!

Follow the basic guidelines;

1. Think of a situation or problem that needs to be resolved.

2. Relate the methods/actions taken etc. to resolve the situation.

3. Solve the problem – everyone lives happily ever after!

Very few writers can boast the ability to complete a short story/novel without some sort of structure, an often used example is:

1. A man gets stuck in a tree

2. Throw stones at him

3. Eventually get him down

Alternatively it could look something like this!

1. Your friend slips on some dog pooh, his false teeth fall to the ground, said dog runs off with teeth.

2. After recovering from fits of laughter you set off in pursuit of mad dog.

3. Promising never to tell a soul about the incident you eventually retrieve the teeth. Somehow you forget to tell him it was your dog!

Obviously there’s a lot more to it than this, but it really does help to start as you mean to go on. The formation of a structure for your story is essential, it may be nothing more complicated than the above example or possibly a far more elaborate blueprint.

Writing your first novel can be a lot easier than you may think.!

As I have said before, Everyone has a story to tell and believe me Anyone can write a novel. So what's holding you back?

Question; "I have the basic outline for my Novel in my mind but how do I plan the structure? Can I get any worthwhile advice ?

Put simply - yes!

Many people who set out to write a novel do not plan the structure of their work or ideas correctly and run aground after the first couple of chapters.

Tips on Writing your First Novel

I wrote my first novel almost 15 years ago. I had never written anything except as a school assignment. So, what qualified me to write? Well, I had read a lot; the classics, sci-fi, adventure novels, and a variety of everything else. But I also thought I had a vivid imagination that could translate well into the written word. The problem was, I had no idea where to begin. I had a few plots knocking around in my head but no clear-cut direction. So I decided to tackle a much smaller project first. I wrote a short story about my days growing up in London, and later, New York. It was only five pages, but it got me started. I still needed an opening, a storyline, and a conclusion. With that out of the way, I began a simple outline for a novel.

My first novel was again about me. I used my own town and other things I knew to fill out a sci-fi adventure novel about someone who experiences a hole in our multi-dimensional world and passes through into the unknown. Because I had been raised in New Jersey, I used all the landmarks that were familiar. As I thought about the plot and characters, I raced toward an ending. It was at that moment I realized something fundamental to a novel. It must have a satisfying ending. I took days to figure out how to end this tale. Finally, I had something that made sense and it was only then that I began to write.

When I finished, I tried to get it published. But, once again, I had no direction so I had no luck finding anyone willing to publish my work. So I decided to keep writing instead. I had ideas for four other books that needed to be put on paper. My second book was far better than the first. The idea sprang from a visit my wife and I made to her 85 year old grandfather back in West Virginia. He lived the past 30 years in the same house he had shared with his recently deceased wife. He was self-sufficient and loved the holler he inhabited. I wondered how old he might live to become.

From that simple premise came my story. It’s a tale about an old man who lived to be 150 years old in West Virginia. He suddenly becomes a young man again and word leaks out to some wealthy old men in New York. He decide that perhaps he holds the secret to youth. They would do anything to be young again with all their money. So they began their quest to capture this unique man and uncover his riddle. I called it “Pursuit of the Phoenix,” and published it a few years back. Since then, I’ve written four others. One is about a talking tree in the Mayan jungle, another is about a drug from China that causes virtual reality, another takes place in the Grand Canyon about the birthplace of all life and finally one discusses the possibility of a modern-day Jesus. So, as an author, what would I recommend to anyone considering beginning a novel? Here are my basic tips:

Start with a short story of less than 30 pages.
Write about something you know or interests you.
Make an outline and detail the characters, setting, and plot.
Write a plausible and interesting ending.
Use believable dialogue, something used everyday.
Stick with common grammar and vocabulary and don’t get too cute.
Once finished, reread and edit until you can’t stand it anymore.

The last one may be the toughest of all. You need to read the completed manuscript and have your friends and relatives read it too. Does it make sense? Let them be critical. Besides the obvious spelling, grammar, and punctuation problems, look for other weaknesses. Does it flow logically? Are the characters and settings believable? In my novel, I needed the readers to a take a leap of faith regarding how a man could regenerate, but I back it up with some scientific reasoning. If you introduce something too strange, you might lose your viewer. Then, once you’re happy with the result, put it away for at least a month. Then pick it up and reread it again. Do this at least three times. I guarantee that each time you will find something to change or edit. It’s tough to read your own work, especially if you know exactly what will happen next.

Once you think you’re ready to publish, decide on one of these directions. You can (1) self-publish with someone like lulu.com where you pay per book or (2) try using either a literary agent or (3) submit directly to a publisher that is accepting new manuscripts. Any of these outlets can be found on the Internet. I recently ended up writing a non-fiction book about my life in the Yellow Page industry which has sold better than my novels. But for you, I suggest you start mapping out that short story and diving into the world of literary pleasures, from an author’s point of view. Good luck and good writing.

Your Writing, Tell it as it is!

The kids are back at school and you have a whole six hours to enlighten the world with your writing prowess. A hot coffee and your favourite chocolates by your side, the day beckons your talent. Settling into position you begin to write. Dappled shadows from the trees outside dance across the wall and suddenly catch your eye, the random shapes take on a life of their own and you are captivated by the spectacle. Heaven! you think, opening your notes, here we go!

Your last attempt was quite good, at least your mother who bought five copies of the magazine thought so! Ok we all know that writing a small piece in a community newsletter is unlikely to win you the 'Booker' prize but at least it's a start. This month's offering is centered around dogs, or more precisely dog owners not cleaning up their pooh, a real problem and one of your pet (no pun intended) hates.

So the scene is set, you are well prepared, fired up and ready to kick some ass. Don't hold back, tell it as it is, name and shame the culprits, you know who they are, you know because you see them every single day. Be controversial and if the story ruffles a few feathers so much the better, as long as your facts stand up you'll make far more friends than enemies. Think of it as doing your bit for the community.

Wherever possible try to come up with logical and workable solutions, don't just offer a list of personal gripes. The world is full of self opinionated professional whingers, moaning their way through life, don't join the list! Make the reader aware of the issues by using your writing skills to capture their imagination, for example:

As a dog owner myself I am totally disgusted and also saddened by the lack of respect shown by certain individuals. Between 7.30 and 9.30 each morning a constant stream of 'dog walkers' frequent a small area of parkland adjacent to my house, most of these are responsible people. Unfortunately as in all walks of life there are a handful of selfish, irresponsible, ignorant scum bags hell bent on making our lives a misery. Can you believe that some of these idiots turn up in cars, kick out their dog/dogs and sit there reading a newspaper. Meantime mans best friend dumps all over the grass and hops back into the car leaving somebody else with the problem. I thought it was the dog that was the dumb animal ........and so on, these clowns are spoiling your life, rub their noses in it!

You've done your homework over the last few weeks and compiled a dossier containing names, dog breeds, car reg no's, dates and times etc. Give the offenders an ultimatum, clean up their act or suffer the consequences. Stress that your dossier would make interesting reading for the local council/police and make it known that you will have no hesitation of handing it over if the problem continues.

As a writer the only special power you have is the power of words, consider yourself privileged and use your power wisely.

Your writing, an ideal first venture

Firstly, all of us here at The Importance of Words (just me actually!) would like to wish everyone a happy, prosperous, stress free and creatively productive new year. If you have not joined the literary ranks by writing your story yet, now is the perfect time. Why not make it one of your resolutions to write a few words every day? Don't jump in at the deep end and risk getting yourself bogged down, take it steady, little and often is the key to staying focused and maintaining enthusiasm when first starting out.

Short stories are a great way to launch your writing career, pick a favourite subject ie a pet, your holidays, a special day at work or a strange/amusing incident etc. etc. - there's a never ending list!
Write a brief plot, personalise your characters, maybe add a theme (honesty prevails sort of stuff), write down a running order and your half way there. The beauty of short stories is that they are short and can soon be discarded if things take a turn for the worse. They allow the writer to practise with words, use suspense, humour, sadness and all the other emotions neccessary to story writing.

Another ideal first venture is to write a review or an article, the very backbone of the internet is comprised of articles and reviews. If someone breaks wind, within a week it has been reviewed and some expert has written a series of articles on it! Have a look around the net for reviews and articles you'll see exactly what I mean. If you have your own website or blog the writing of reviews and articles with a link back to your site can have a very beneficial effect on your traffic, something worth bearing in mind believe me! That aside it is also a fantastic way to develop your writing skills and gain confidence in your creative ability.

Writing an article is dead easy, pick a subject you know something about and proceed to tell everyone what you know! Don't be boring, try and make your writing jump off the screen, be controversial your the expert here! Perhaps the most important element is the title, this is what entices people to view your article, let's assume it's about cooking a steak for example,

Education, Write or Wrong?

My youngest son bless him is 9 years old, his writing/reading skills are, with a bit of help on my part, far more advanced than his years. He started reading the excellent 'Secrets of Droon' series of books by Tony Abbott about 4 years ago, closely followed by the legendary 'Harry Potter' adventures. At breakfast time whatever happens to lying on the table (newspapers, magazines even junk mail) are scrutinised with a passion .... then the questions begin. What does ***** mean? Why did Tony Blair say **********? Yes we've all been there! Obviously there are certain limitations to a 9 year old child's conception of the world, but usually most of the questions are answered plainly and as honestly as possible.

The dreaded end of term parents evening beckons and if the last one is anything to go by this is the probable scenario;

Teacher - I think he could put more effort into his literacy lessons.

Me - Carry on.

Teacher - Your son seems to show a lack of interest in his reading and writing classes.

Me - Carry on.

Teacher - I was just thinking what we could do to address the problem.

Me - My son reads, and writes his own stories for hours on end, there is no problem.

Teacher - Maybe but he seems to find it hard at school.

Me - I've seen the stuff he brings home from school and quite frankly it's nearly all outdated rubbish!

Teacher - I'm sorry you feel that way.

Me - So am I but it's true!

Teacher - What would you suggest then?

Me - I suggest that the faceless archaic bureaucrats supposedly running the education system drag themselves and the curriculum out of the dark ages. I know it's not your fault and to a certain extent your hands are tied but honestly some of the subject matter bears little or no relevance to modern society.

End of conversation, sound familiar!

My sister in law - (Miss X for the purpose of this story) is an English teacher working in an inner city 'Learning Centre' (school). An idyllic job at a well to do all girls College, through her own choice, came to an end and on returning to her 'roots' decided to take on a more challenging role. The majority of the kids here have ethnic, mixed race or under privileged backgrounds and as such, rightly or wrongly, need an education tailored to their individual needs. Whether this should be funded by the taxpayer is a question I can not unfortunately answer, I have my own views naturally but lets stick to the plot!

Miss X is involved mainly with kids who think that 'Shakespeare' is the pub round the corner, Wuthering Heights is some naff song their mother plays endlessly and the only writing they do is usually confined to expletives and graffiti in public places. She soon realised that some of the kids didn't even want to be in school, some of them put up with it but would rather be elsewhere and a handful actually enjoyed the experience and participated fully in her lessons.

She listened to the kids, we're talking 14 - 16 year olds here, and took on board their needs, comments, suggestions etc and after reading between the lines (and sometimes a barrage of 'F' words!) realised surprise surprise, most of them deep down were responsible, caring young adults, they just showed it in different ways.

The most popular gripe held by the kids was, you've guessed it, the relevance or total lack of it regarding some of the subjects they were being force fed. The main reason half of them were bunking off every day!

Unless they are studying for a degree or writing an essay/paper, young kids today don't need Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde etc. Maybe the odd updated example to illustrate a point, but to the kids I'm talking about it's all a foreign language. Many of the words, metaphors and similies have no use whatsoever in modern day vocabulary. My own feelings are that some of the so called 'Classics' are now history and should be placed in that category.

Although her job at the school is still in it's infancy Miss X has integrated more up to date authors/writers into her lessons, interest has grown and student participation has increased along with attendance levels. Nuff said. How long will it take for the aforementioned education chiefs to brush away the cobwebs and bring our schools into the 21st Century?

Until such a time arises I will actively encourage my son, with a little supervision, to read anything and everything he chooses. The questions, even the awkward ones will still be answered honestly and hopefully his journey into young adulthood will not be a confusing, daunting or lonely experience.

Making the Time to Write

Writing can be a lonely business, its very nature usually demands long hours of solitude hidden away in your own quiet corner of creativity. The real world and all of its concentration breaking disturbances is temporarily cast aside as you are sucked deeper and deeper into a whirlpool of sumptuous words.
Entering your world you begin to write,

Chapter seven; The night had been cold, a heavy frost obscured his view from the bedroom window as Daniel eventually struggled to his feet. His heart sank as he gingerly opened the window and looked out on a new day. The black Mercedes containing his two assailants was still parked menacingly across the road, the driver tapping his fingers on the steering wheel to a muffled heavy rock beat. Glancing to his left he noticed the bullet that had ripped through his shoulder was now lodged firmly in the wall next to a cheap print of the Virgin Mary. "Jesus!" he began to laugh but the pain....................

MUM! ... MUM! Whats for tea?

You try to ignore ignore the intrusion and soldier on after all your son is 27 and can look after himself!

Ring Ring.....Ring Ring..... Its for you mum, dad needs a lift.

Approximately 90 minutes later, tea sorted, husband retrieved you are back in your corner seeking a hasty return to your own world.

Do you want to write? How to find - no, make time to write

In today’s busy world, few of us have the luxury to spend hours pursuing a writing dream. There’s no such thing as finding time to write. You have to make the time! As with other priorities, if you want it bad enough, you’ll find a way to fit some writing time into your schedule. How do you this?

First, you need to dispel some of the myths about writing. You don’t need huge chunks of time. Several focused, 15-minute sessions can be very productive over the course of days, weeks, and months. Can you expand that time to half an hour? Even better! Whenever you can squeeze in some time, do it.

Don’t wait for inspiration. One of the greatest myths about writing is that you have to feel fully inspired to write. While inspiration is great, it’s not a prerequisite. Writing is like any other skill. The more you practice, the better you get. Sitting down to write and producing something—anything—is better than not writing at all. Waiting for the muse is a great way to procrastinate and make excuses.

Now that you know two important rules (or non-rules), how else can you make the time to write? The following tips will help you spend more time writing and less time thinking about it.

1. Commit. If you want to be a writer, you have to write, plain and simple. Make writing a priority.

2. Share your commitment with others. Let your family and friends know that writing is important to you. Of course, you need to demonstrate this by writing. Once they see that you are committed, their level of support will likely increase.

3. Realize that some things may have to go, or at least be put aside. Most people can’t do it all. For some, even making fifteen minutes means that something else, such as vacuuming, is going to be put on hold. The house does not have to look perfect.

4. Keep your priorities in perspective. Yes, your children come first. So that means your writing time may need to happen when the kids are asleep. For many writers, this means getting up early, before everyone else, or staying up late after everyone else is asleep.

5. Give yourself mini goals. For some, a page a day is a reasonable goal. For others, it’s 500 words. Figure out a reasonable, yet still challenging goal, and stick to it.

6. Keep writing.

7. Turn off your inner critic. This is the voice that tells you your writing is no good. First, you need to get something on paper (or screen). You can call on this voice later when it’s time to revise. (Many writers find that early morning writing is the best writing time as far as keeping this voice quiet.)

8. Keep writing.

9. Don’t think about “big picture” issues such as whether or not the work will be published and where. This comes later. The top priority is getting those first drafts done. Then you can work on the other stuff (such as revising!).

10. Keep writing

As with other important things in life, writing takes time and effort. However, few things match the satisfaction of setting a goal, sticking to it, and watching your writing grow.

Before that I'd like to share a few well chosen words before wrapping my Christmas presents!

I can't believe it, the festive season (and everything that goes with it) has crept up and grabbed us by the throat yet again. Notice the use of 'festive season' as opposed to ******mas. Here in that politically correct outpost of the E.U. formerly known as Great Britain the 'C' word is no more. Defunct, obselete, surplus to requirement, offensive, upsetting to certain 'ethnic' minorities and ..... the list is endless ... BORING!

Live and let live for heavens sake its called CHRISTMAS, a historic Christian festival to promote goodwill, harmony and peace to all mankind. A time to set aside any prejudices, a time to enjoy and celebrate life itself regardless of colour ,creed, religion or radical individual preferences.

Ok a handful of extremists are offended by the nation celebrating its Christian heritage and national pride then thats tough that's their problem! Perhaps they should be questioning their own reasons for actually being in Britain. We all know the religious/cultural divide is enormous and always will be, no amount of preaching will change the fact that we are what we are.

Lets all concentrate on making the most of our own lives without interfering in the lives of others.

Improve Your Writing by Not Writing.

Every writer needs some help with their writing. Every writer can improve their writing. One simple technique you can use to improve your writing and better develop your writing process is to spend less time writing and more time thinking about your writing.

Many writers struggle with their early drafts simply because they have not allowed an idea enough time to simmer. Giving yourself time to brainstorm, sift and sort through ideas, and to both have and build upon creative inspirations is one of the keys to becoming a successful and productive writer.

It is best to work on this when you are away from your desk, your computer and any writing equipment (even something as simple as a paper and pencil) however that is the only rule about location. You can sit yourself on a park bench or in your car, you can take a walk or a jog, or you can perform some mindless household task such as vacuuming, folding clothes or washing dishes. There really are not rules as long as you can focus the majority of your brain power on your writing without the distractions of friends, family, or co-workers.

Even with today's hectic, busy days there are moments when we are alone with our thoughts and if you want to improve your writing then you should set aside at least a portion of those moments to focus on your writing. In fact, you might find that not only does this improve your work but it also allows you to multi-task by completing some other mundane task (or simply getting in your exercise for the day). I promise you that once you have focused your brain on your writing that you will see an increase in your productivity. You will actually spend less time in front of the computer (or notebook) but will deliver more quality writing in that shorter time.

It is important once you are set on a specific project that you focus your thoughts on that goal. If you are writing something short then focus first on the introduction, for example. If you are writing a novel or book then focus on one scene or section of a chapter. Create a movie in your head, and because it is your movie, do not overlook the sounds, smells, and textures that go along with it. Put yourself in the shoes of the characters of your movie so you can identify with them and feel their emotions. Play with words and sentences in your head. Get a feel for the rhythm of the language. Does it match the "movie" you created?

The more you work these elements over in your head then the easier it will be when you sit back down to write. Use your head to make writing easier for you and more effective as well.

The more time you spend thinking and planning your writing before you set out to work on your latest project the better.

Fantastic news, you’ve finally taken the plunge . I know you wish you’d done it years ago, but a spouse, three kids, two dogs, a full time job etc, etc, ……aarrgghh!! Tell me about it!. Better late than never is what I say.

Is it a novel, perhaps a short story? it could be your autobiography or even an article for a magazine/newsletter. Regardless of the content, nature or intensity of your writing make yourself one promise ....enjoy it!

So many would be writers fall at the first hurdle, not through lack of talent, effort, commitment or endeavour.

The first and most important area to work on is structure.

1. Think of a situation or problem that needs to be resolved.
2. Relate the methods/actions taken etc.to resolve the situation.
3. Solve the problem – everyone lives happily ever after!

Very few writers can boast the ability to complete a short story/novel without some sort of structure, an often used example is:

1. A man gets stuck in a tree
2. Throw stones at him
3. Eventually get him down

Alternatively it could look something like this!

1. Your friend slips on some dog pooh, his false teeth fall to the ground, said dog runs off with teeth

2. After recovering from fits of laughter you set off in pursuit of mad dog.

3. Promising never to tell a soul about the incident you eventually retrieve the teeth. Somehow you forget to tell him it was your dog!

Obviously there’s a lot more to it than this, but it really does help to start as you mean to go on.

How To Write Non-fiction That Sells ... by Louise Dop

Nothing turns a reader off more quickly than a list of dry facts and figures. Good fiction writers always show rather than tell but it’s worth remembering that the technique can work for non-fiction too. Follow this advice and your articles will make compulsive reading.

When writing general interest material, often you can’t avoid dealing in numbers. How big? How heavy? How many miles?
To help the reader to absorb this information, why not make it more enticing? I could tell you that a dripping tap can waste 1,800 litres of water per month but wouldn’t you be more amazed to learn that this is equivalent to twelve full baths?
When you do quantify your data, choose the appropriate units of measurement.

While a contemporary (or European) audience will appreciate the fact that the largest recorded snake, an Indonesian reticulated python, measured 10 metres long, the over sixties market might be more impressed by its length of 32 feet and nine and a half inches. In certain cases you could even decide to leave the measurements out all together –
“the record breaking snake stretched further than five tall men lying head to toe!”

Write about the past using dates and well known events to put the information into a historical context. The birth of your subject in 1620 may not mean much to readers. Point out that he was working in London at the time of the Great Fire of London in 1666 and the day to day reality of his life comes into focus.

Timescales are another handy tool, especially for illustrating the effort involved in great human achievement. Most people know that Sir Christopher Wren was responsible for the beauty of St. Paul’s cathedral in London. The fact that the building took over 35 years to complete emphasises the enormity of his vision.

Human interest sells so be prepared to use it.
Interview real people and let them build up your topic.
Direct quotes uplift a feature in the way that dialogue enlivens fiction.
Give your spokesmen character.

While you might not take the tabloid route of “busty blue-eyed twenty something”, readers will gain insight on learning that a quote came from a forty two year old nurse with six children or a silverware expert from Colchester.
Don’t forget to humanise dusty historical figures with personal details. The scientifically minded can appreciate Sir Isaac Newton’s grasp of gravitational forces. Who can resist the suggestion that when engrossed in a challenging problem he sometimes forgot to get out of bed for days at a time?

Travel writing is one area that requires hard facts but these can best be supplied using fact boxes (known as sidebars). The heart of the article should concentrate on bringing the destination directly to the audience.
Use all of your senses to report on the surroundings and remember that every detail counts.

Prospective travellers will want to know that baths in the hotel are dirty or that Spiro’s restaurant serves the juiciest kebabs. Add dialogue to the mix with a few local phrases spoken by well defined characters.
Travel writing is your chance to be creative as skilful imagery will capture the scenery but beware of clichés. Rather than “the sun went down like a fiery red ball”, try “the sunset spread across the clouds like spilt wine over crisp linen.”

Marketable non-fiction is tight on word count and heavy on facts. Add value to a piece by referencing further sources of information. A list of relevant books, websites, stores, addresses or telephone numbers doesn’t take up much space but gives your article depth and keeps the reader thinking about the subject long after they’ve reached the last sentence.
The work is also more likely to be retained for future reference – a plus point for the publisher.

If you apply these principles to your non-fiction writing, it won’t only be readers who can’t put it down - editors will be hooked too.
